The Purpose of Religion and the True Path
Simply put, the true purpose of religion is to get our attention; to remind us of the need to (re)connect with Source (God). However, religion is not the Path - it points to the Path, but is only the "wake up call."
This was not always true. At the core of each religion is the teaching of the Path; however, in the present day, it is usually so buried by tradition, dogma, rituals, rules, and fighting others who are from different religions/backgrounds, that the Path is not only obscured, it is forgotten.
In the earliest Christian traditions, before 200 AD, there were two levels of teaching: the "outer" surface teachings about morals, etc, and the "inner" teachings. The inner teachings taught how to connect with God, and have a transformation of consciousness that was life-changing.
This same teaching lies buried at the roots of Christianity, Islam, Sufism, Sikhism, and Buddhism.
Today the spiritual seeker should "graduate" from their religion, having had the transformation of consciousness where they experience God, not just go through the rituals of a religion. I do not advocate necessarily denouncing or leaving your religious tradition, but you will see it for what it is. Basic teachings, and a wake-up call to connect with God.
"O Traveller! Seek the path that lies within you." - Maharishi Mehi
Truth is an experience, NOT a belief! You have been taught to believe this and that about God and life....but what is your experience?
